During World War II, Wehrmacht troops are stationed in the northern Finnish city of Oulu. At first, the Germans are received as heroes and unreservedly admired, especially by the local boys. Gradually, these lose their illusions about the war, which has different effects on their lives. Jake, the main character, reacts most dramatically to the losses he has to suffer.
